The Big Bark – S05E07 Episode #84 – Skin allergies, pet awards and a society without justice

The Big Bark dog podcast is Irelands Number 1 dog related podcast. Each episode, Darragh and his trusty sidekick pups Bruno, Milly & Roxy bringing all the canine stories to you, with the biggest interviews with pet professionals.

Once again, this week, we welcome back Dr. Ashleigh Bugler from Treaty Veterinary Clinic to our health hub – Dr. Bugler this week gives an overview of skin allergies, how to handle these and how to know if your dog is suffering from issues with their anal glands and how you can provide them with some relief.

This week, we take a look at the case of a Cork woman who walked away with a minimal 250 euro fine after pleading guilty to 12 counts of animal cruelty. With dogs found stuffed in crates, living in their own shit and with one dog even being presented to a local vet with a broken pelvis after being forced to try mate with a larger breed dog, the ignorance of the judge in this case can only be described as astounding, proof that the justice system is a failure when it comes to the protection and welfare of animals.

We also tell you how you can nominate your favourite pet business for the local pet awards.

The Big Bark – S05E06 Episode #83 – Itchy skin conditions and dealing with changing attitudes towards dogs

Bugler this week chats itchy skin conditions including hot spots, how to handle these and how to know if your dog is suffering from issues with their anal glands and how you can provide them with some relief.

Since the announcment of the XL bully ban by Minister Humpreys, we’ve been contacted by a number of dog owners who have told us there is a changing attitude from the public towards their dogs and not just toward restricted breeds either. There appears to be a general widespread fear of all dogs by a specific cohort of society, which is coming from mainstream media fuelling the fear along with local councillors such as DLR council and most recently Cllr Gavan of Limerick Council calling on Mayor John Moran to introduce bye laws to deal with what she says are over 70 restricted breeds. The spread of misinformation from councillors is causing an unease among both the public and dog owners. We discuss why councillors need to display effective control of the information that they share and why our local authorities and the dog hating cohort of society need to be re-educated on matters surrounding dog control.x

The Big Bark – S05E05 Episode #82 – Controversial times a comin, Ditchin the Itch, & Dock diving at Dogfest

The Big Bark dog podcast brought to you by Dogs.ie & Mutt Mitts Ireland is Irelands Number 1 dog related podcast. Each episode, Darragh and his trusty sidekick pups Bruno, Milly & Roxy bringing all the canine stories to you, with the biggest interviews with pet professionals.

This week, we welcome back Dr. Ashleigh Bugler from Treaty Veterinary Clinic to our health hub – Dr. Bugler this week chats about itchy ears and ear infections and how to help your dog ditch that itch.

We chat about the newly announced XL bully ban which was announced by Minister for rural and community development Heather Humpreys last Friday and we also focus in on the immediate negative effect this is having with one local authority Dun Laoighre Rathdown County council, operating outside of the boundaries of the control of dogs act 1986 and control of dogs regulations 1998 to implement instructions to prohibit the rehoming of all restricted breed dogs. DLR council civil servants had also issued instructions outlining that these breeds were to be destroyed within 5 days if unclaimed from Dublin dog pound by their owners sparking outrage from the dog owner community in Ireland. We chat about this and hear some of your thoughts on the matter.

We also chat about a great day out at Dogfest in Cork yesterday where we got to chat to some wonderful business owners and try out some of the cool activities like Agility and dock diving. Hear all about our adventures down at the marina market for dogfest in cork this weekend.

The Big Bark – Episode S05E02 #79 – Dogs & Entertainment: The wonderful days out Vs the lining the breeders pockets

The Big Bark – S05E01 Episode #78 – A brand new day – Consent, Scooping the poop and a hike in the wilderness

The Big Bark dog podcast sponsored by dogs.ie is Irelands Number 1 dog related podcast. Each episode, Darragh and his trusty sidekick pups Bruno, Milly & Roxy bringing all the canine stories to you, with the biggest interviews with pet professionals.

This week, we launched our brand new campaign around Consent and the importance of asking an owner if its ok to pet their dog. The campaign was launched in response to a new ISPCA campaign which solely puts the blame of dog bites to children on dog owners. While unprovoked attacks by dogs which are not under effective control are the responsibility of the dog owner, statistics show that most dog bites occur due to the behaviour of a child and in many cases adults also. This comes down to 3 issues.

1) Neither children or parents ask a dog owner for permission before rubbing or greeting a dog, and end up scaring that dog to the point where they are forced to retaliate and defend themselves by biting the child or adult.

2) Many people, both dog owners and non dog owners, fail to understand the body language – commonly known as calming signals that a dog displays to them, which in essence is telling said individual to back off and in the dogs words “leave me alone – I don’t want you near me”

3) Hugging, close contact and being too rough with a dog – Dogs generally don’t like to be hugged, particularly by strangers. Many dogs don’t want to be hugged outright but children in particular fail to see this and their parents often blatantly ignore this due to the fact they think “its cute that theyre hugging”. The reality is that if a dog does not want to be hugged, it will make them anxious by doing so and this anxiety if ignored will escalate ultimately to growling and eventually biting.

We also discuss Scoop the Poop week this week with Ciaran Sheehan from Mutt Mitts Ireland and the importance of picking up after your dog.

Lastly we also discuss how hiking and trekking to Glen of Aherlow and Knocknafierna is making a big difference to mine, Jen’s and Roxy’s well being and how this new challenge is getting us fit and active on a weekly basis.
